Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
