Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
