Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
